Weekly Blog- Method Statements

This week we look into the topic of Method Statements or Standard Operating Procedures as they are sometimes known. We’ll be looking into what they are, how you should go about writing one and why they are important.

So, what is a Method Statement?

A method statement, in short, is a set of written procedures on how to undertake a routine, regular or foreseeable operation. The operations it may cover range from day charters to bunkering fuel to tendering operations. Method Statements are usually written so that they are specific to the task in hand rather than being an all encompassing document. By splitting them up to be specific to an operation it allows increased specialisation and allows for greater detail which makes following them much easier.

How should you write one?

Method statements are fairly easy to write. In essence, they are a set of instructions that, if you were to give them to anyone, they should be able to follow them and complete the operation exactly as you intended them to. The best way to start writing a method statement is by first writing a risk assessment for the operation, identifying the risks involved and putting in place control measures to alleviate these risks. By doing this first we can then incorporate all of these control measures into our method statement. We should then go about writing a step by step set of instructions on how we should carry out the operation at hand. A numbered or bullet point list is a good way of doing this. Including pictures from the operation and diagrams is always a good way of explaining things. A method statement should also include, where possible, potential foreseeable contingencies should something go wrong for example, a contingency plan should you have a fuel spill whilst bunkering fuel.

Why are they important?

Method Statements are important for allowing standardisation within your business and allowing you to follow pre-thought out risk assessments. By following a method statement you should be following the risk assessment you wrote for that operation. Training and inducting a new crew member into your business will also take less time as they are able to read the method statements and gain a grasp of how the various operations are conducted before even stepping foot onto your vessel. In larger businesses, method statements can be key to ensure that the standard of service to your customer is uniform throughout everyone of your vessels or operations.
